Belly Dancer Art
Why I Started Drawing Belly Dancers Around 2005 my sister Dawn started belly dancing with Ruby Jazayre in South Bend, Indiana. Dawn loved it so much that eventually I decided to give it a try too.
I am so glad I did. Ruby Jazayre has been teaching belly dance in the South Bend and Mishawaka area since 2001. She created something really special in that studio — a space where women of all shapes, sizes and ages came together and just danced. No judgment, no competition, just joy. That's a rare thing and Ruby built it on purpose.
Walking into that environment as a new dancer was genuinely wonderful.
Watching women be completely free in their bodies, laughing and moving together — it went straight into my sketchbook. I started drawing belly dancers almost immediately and I haven't really stopped.
I drew Ruby. I drew Dawn. I drew my sister Harmony, who dances with them now too. I made art for DVDs and flyers for Festive Night, a show they used to put on in South Bend. The dancers kept inspiring me and the art kept coming.
If you love belly dance as much as I do, I have a whole collection of belly dancer art including a sticker dedicated to Ruby herself. You can find them here:
And the full belly dance collection is over on Zazzle too.
